Between Tradition and Creativity: The Case of Bharatanatyam

Date and time: 2019-05-30 18:00 - 2019-05-30 20:00

Location: VU Azijos ir transkultūrinių studijų institutas, Universiteto g. 5, Vilnius

On the 30th of May, we invite you to an open interactive lecture of a well-known Indian dancer SHILPA NANJAPPA. She is an established artist of BHARATANATYAM and is one of the most sought after dancers of her generation in India. Having trained under the illustrious Guru late Padmini Ramachandran of Bengaluru for over 2 decades, Shilpa has to her credit over 200 solo performances worldwide.

She lives in Coorg and continues to work in Choreography, teaches advanced classes in Bengaluru and performs at some of the most prestigious platforms of the country and abroad.

Artists who dedicate their life to traditional arts usually are believed to carry and convey unique and immovable tradition, cultural traits that cannot change and need to be preserved in such a way that one could admire things of the past.

We are emphasising the tradition but where does the artist stand? What is his role and how does he express himself through the fixed rules and patterns of the Tradition?

She will share her insights about the creativity within a fixed traditon through her dances and will be open to your questions and live discussion.

The lecture will take place at VU Azijos ir transkultūrinių studijų institutas, Hindi auditorium (Universiteto st. 5) at 6pm.

The event is FREE OF CHARGE and will take place in ENGLISH.
